The mainstay-stucco, vinyl and fiber cement-continue to exist, adding many new siding products, offering new perspectives on durability, performance and aesthetics

This may be the golden age of the siding product category. As the demand for houses in the construction industry has exploded, stable new house siding options are also appearing on the market, which are expected to combine low maintenance and aesthetics.

Today, a series of new product categories have emerged, such as Boral TruExterior’s polymer/fly ash siding, Daltile’s ceramic cladding, DaVinci Roofscapes’ synthetic split siding, and more. Even old spares, such as wood and vinyl, provide options for improvement and updates.

As the modern appearance tends to rise, more and more brands are promoting panel systems for home siding, bringing commercial appearance to the residential market, and smooth overlapping siding suitable for popular modern farmhouse aesthetics. At the 2019 International Builders' Show, LP Building Solutions expanded its engineered wood siding product portfolio to include SmartSide Smooth.

"In the past few years, our customers have been looking for a solution that can provide the durability of LP SmartSide with a smooth aesthetic," said Derek Blank, LP Senior Brand Manager of LP SmartSide at the time of the product launch. "We are very happy to be able to launch such a product. Our new LP SmartSide Smooth Trim & Siding utilizes our durable wire harness technology and now has a smooth surface."

Smooth siding products are also favored by fiber cement manufacturers, such as Allura and James Hardie Building Products. As early as 2017, Hardie launched the Aspyre series, combining the modern design of its Reveal Panel System with the traditional contours of its craftsman siding. Goal: Provide the product portfolio in this series to help architects and builders realize the design vision of various architectural styles from traditional to modern and modern.

Sean Gadd, the company’s chief marketing officer, said during the introduction: “James Hardie will always strive to push the limits and think and design our products in new ways.” “The Aspyre series is perfect. It reflects James Hardie’s tradition of not only responding to market trends, but also motivating them.”

In terms of siding options, some brands provide builders with the best of both worlds in one product. For example, Boral Building Products' reversible Shiplap-Nickel Gap siding profile in its TruExterior gray wall panels and decorative lines allows builders to Install the new side to reveal a smooth or wood grain profile. The notched edges ensure that the panels fit perfectly to create true spacing.

Previously, contractors could choose TruExterior profiles with irreversible smooth or wood grain overlap and smooth nickel gaps. Combining four widths and two standard lengths, the reversible format provides a total of 16 possible contour combinations. This means that dealers can stock fewer SKUs, and builders can use a single panel to design more diverse streetscapes.

"Our new reversible Shiplap-Nickel Gap profile allows builders and remodelers to easily create a beautiful and stylish appearance that is both eye-catching and high-performance. The appearance truly stands the test of time," Boral Brand Manager Ben Drury in Products Said when posting.

Like many home furnishing siding products on the market, TruExterior aims to imitate the appearance of painted wood. Once the main siding material of American wood reached its highest market share (44%) in 1981 and 1982, these numbers have changed. Buyers feel aversion to the maintenance and decay of materials. The new generation of wood products hope to solve these problems.

Wood products from companies such as Thermal USA (providing heat-treated products) or modified wood products from Lignia and Kebony promise newer and enhanced performance attributes.

Thermory stated that its ash, pine and spruce products have undergone a heat treatment process to transform each wood board into a core, "without sacrificing the natural quality of solid wood, to achieve unparalleled durability and stability." Thermory promises Corrosion resistance of 20 to 25 years or more.

Lignia provides a 50-year anti-corrosion and fungal rot warranty for its improved wood cladding in above-ground applications, while Kebony provides a 30-year anti-corrosion warranty for above-ground contact use.

However, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2019, it seems that despite the innovation and breadth of new products, the usual suspects are still the king of the mountain. Overall, the census data shows that the main exterior wall materials used for new single-family houses are broken down into:

Although regionally, certain materials (such as vinyl in the northeast and stucco in the Pacific, mountain and South Atlantic regions) continue to dominate its market, overall, stucco and fiber cement have grown steadily over the past 10 years. Vinyl census data shows that it has lost a 25-year lead in new homes.

According to Cornerstone Building Brands, its Mastic Western Extreme siding is the only vinyl product designed and manufactured to adapt to the wild west weather and provide homeowners with solutions to life and maintenance issues. The specially designed panels use next-generation polymer technology to protect the house from the destructive infrared light, low humidity, and rapid temperature changes found in the western mountains. The wood board has a wood grain texture and specially formulated pigments to protect the new rich colors from high temperatures.

Composite roofing manufacturer DaVinci Roofscapes has developed a new series of home siding with the same technology used in its roofing products. The company said that Hand-Split Shake Siding mimics the appearance of a cedar milkshake, but it will not curl, curl, or split like real cedar. The siding is a combination of resin, ultraviolet and heat stabilizers, and flame retardant materials to make it resistant to impact, fire, mold, algae, insects, salty air and strong winds. There are eight colors to choose from, the color of each piece of clothing is the same, and the milkshake does not need to be painted. The tiles are 18 inches high, 5/8 inches thick, and 8 or 10 inches wide. The 10-inch wide part has an analog keyway that makes the 4-inch and 6-inch wide jitters appear to be placed together to create a multi-width appearance.

By adding the reversible Shiplap-Nickel Gap siding profile to its TruExterior multi-gray siding and trim series, Boluo Construction products enable builders and remodelers to easily create beautiful, stylish appearances that are both eye-catching and high-performance , The company said. There are two formats to choose from: a smooth nickel gap on one side and a wood grain overlap on the other, or a wood grain nickel gap on one side and a smooth overlap on the other side. The siding has widths of 4, 6, 8 and 10 inches and lengths of 12 and 16 feet.

Trespa has launched two dark matte colors in its Lumen series-Metropolitan Black and New York Gray, expanding its Pura NFC exterior facing series for residential and low-rise multi-family buildings. Pura NFC is a series of engineered high pressure laminates made of wood fiber, kraft paper and phenolic resin. This product is very suitable for exterior wall cladding, and can also be used to decorate exterior walls and interior surfaces. According to the manufacturer, the properties of Lumen allow natural light to spread over the matte surface, creating soft lighting in saturated color finishes.

The company said that Lignia is FSC-certified cork, which can be modified to create high-performance products that are very suitable for siding applications. The modification process creates a wood product with little movement but with all the characteristics of hardwood. It has a 50-year minimum rot and fungal rot warranty in above-ground applications, and provides some termite protection.

Allura said its fiber cement siding products use advanced formulations, even in the most extreme climates. These products are fire-resistant, moisture-proof and weather-resistant, and can be used as smooth boards or have deep, lifelike wood grain textures. There are 30 pre-painted colors to choose from to provide protection. The plank is 12 feet long.

LP has updated its SmartSide engineered wood siding with a smooth finish option that has the look of traditional painted wood. The company said that this engineered wood product has been treated to help the product resist termite and fungal rot, thereby maintaining long-term strength and durability in all weather conditions. It provides a 5/50 year limited warranty.

The company stated that Kebony US siding is a modified wood product that does not require any maintenance except for basic cleaning. The sustainable softwood developed in Norway undergoes a patented environmentally friendly process that includes injecting a bio-based liquid (a plant-derived waste called furfuryl alcohol) into the wood and exposing the material to heat above 100°C, permanently increasing The cell wall of thick wood enhances its performance. This process gives the product high-quality hardwood characteristics and rich brown.

SureTeed has developed the next generation of Cedar Impressions, one of its most popular polymer siding products. The series of dual 7-inch 3G straight-edged perfect shingles and accent panels are now available in various new colors and shapes. They are installed like real cedar shingles, protruding by 1 inch, and are available in 22 colors.

The company stated that James Hardie Building Products' Aspyre is a luxurious fiber cement siding series that combines two product lines and can be used alone or in combination, providing industry professionals with unlimited design possibilities. James Hardie combines the thick and unique contours of his Artisan siding with a smooth geometric Reveal panel system. This enables architects and builders to create high-performance designs from traditional to ultra-modern in a variety of colors and designs.
